Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling is finally breaking his silence on the scandal involving his racial remarks, which led him to be banned from the NBA for life.
In an interview with Anderson Cooper for his CNN show, AC360, the 80-year-old reveals it was his “one mistake” and “I’ll never do it again.”
Anderson called in to On Air with Ryan Seacrest on Monday morning to give some of the details of his exclusive one-on-one that airs tonight.
“He says this is not who he is,” explains Anderson of his hour-long conversation with Sterling. “He says he’s taken responsibility for it. A few sentences later, he’s also pointing the finger at this woman, V. Stiviano, saying he was kind of goaded into making these comments … that he hasn’t said anything like this in the past. There a lot of people obviously who will disagree with him.”
Anderson adds that Sterling also has a lot to say about retired Los Angeles Lakers star Magic Johnson, whose Instagram photo with Stiviano prompted Sterling’s rant.
“He’s great,” says Sterling about Magic in a clip from his AC360 interview. “But I don’t think he is a good example for the children of Los Angeles.”
What does Anderson think Sterling meant with that comment? “He goes a lot farther than that … I’m not really clear [what Sterling means]. He clearly has some sort of issue with Magic Johnson. He claims Magic Johnson called him up and talked to him twice in the course of all this since the tapes were released . He clearly has an issue with some part of the discussion.”
As for whether or not Sterling was genuine with his apology for what he said, Anderson is going let viewers decide.
“I can’t tell what’s in somebody’s heart,” he explains. “I wanted to give him a fair platform, I wanted to ask him the tough questions, but I wanted to allow him to speak, and so many people have spoken about him, have sold recordings of him, that I just thought it’s fair to let him speak.”
