Elizabeth Smart's kidnapper getting out

One of Elizabeth Smart's kidnappers is about to be freed from prison.

The Utah Board of Pardons has reversed an earlier decision saying that 72-year-old Wanda Barzee would not get credit for eight years she served in federal prison. So now, she'll be released from a Utah prison on September 19th.

Barzee and her husband, Brian David Mitchell, abducted Smart from her bedroom in Salt Lake City in 2002, when she was 14. They held her for nine months before bystanders recognized her walking with them in nearby Sandy, Utah, and she was rescued. (Salt Lake Tribune)

Smart, now a 30-year-old married mother of two, issued a statement in response to the news, calling herself “surprised and disappointed.” She said, "It is incomprehensible how someone who has not cooperated with her mental-health evaluations or risk assessments and someone who did not show up to her own parole hearing can be released into our community.”
