George Clooney lost 28 pounds for his role in The Midnight Sky --and it landed him in the hospital.

According to the U.K.’sMirror, the 59-year-old developed pancreatitis a few days before filming was set to begin and was hospitalized with stomach pains.

George tells th eMirror, “I think I was trying too hard to lose the weight quickly and probably wasn’t taking care of myself.”

Clooney, who also directs the film, adds, “It took a few weeks to get better and as a director, it’s not so easy because you need energy. We were out on this glacier in Finland, which made it a lot harder work. But it certainly helped with the character.”

In the movie George plays a scientist who races to contact a crew of astronauts in the Arctic to warn them not to return to Earth.

The Midnight Sky comes out December 23rd.
